Poetry Slam

Cost: Free

Once you are all ready, each person takes turns presenting their works and the works of others. Remember it's good manners to snap rather than clap at a poetry reading. You can even snap during the poem if a line really resonated with you.

This is a great opportunity to write something kind for or about your partner. Who knows, it may become a treasure forever. No pressure though, you can always keep it light-hearted too. I am particularly inclined towards poems that make me laugh.

This is a great opportunity to write something kind for or about your partner. Who knows, it may become a treasure forever. No pressure though, you can always keep it light-hearted too. I am particularly inclined towards poems that make me laugh.

Here is a little instruction to start you off

How to write a traditional Haiku

The entire poem consists of just three lines, with 17 syllables in total.

  1. The first line is 5 syllables.
  2. The second line is 7 syllables.
  3. The third line is 5 syllables
Example:

A date night, so fun
An evening of laughs and joy
A memory made

How to write a limerick

A limerick is five lines arranged in one stanza.

  • The first line, second line, and fifth lines end in words that rhyme together.
  • The third and fourth lines must rhyme with each other.
Example:

After too many dates all the same
They felt that their dating was lame
So they put in some time
and invested a dime
And invented a really fun game

How to write Rhymed Poetry

Rhymed poetry rhymes by definition, although their scheme varies.

Example:

I love you,
it's really true,
there's nothing that I wouldn't do.

You are the one,
We have such fun,
and now our date night has begun.

Just play our song,
This makes us strong,
One day our kids can tag along.

Try learning about one of these together!

Blank verse poems, Sonnets, Lyric poetry, or Soliloquy.
